Fellow’s First Coffee Brewer Is Stunning. But Its Looks May Be the Least Interesting Thing About It

If you care about coffee, you care about Fellow. The San Francisco company is responsible for some of the most stylish gear in the coffee industry, with products available at the MoMA Design Store as proof.

Having built its reputation on sleek accessories such as kettles, scales and grinders, Fellow looks set to tackle the most important tool of all: the actual brewer. The Aiden Precision Coffee Maker, shipping this September but available pre-sale now, shares the same understated aesthetic of the EKG Electric Stagg Kettle and Ode Brew Grinder. However, its calling card is actually not its looks.

The Aiden features two brew baskets that can shift seamlessly from a 10-cup coffee maker to a single-cup brewer, “so no one has to compromise,” said founder and CEO Jake Miller. It also features smart features designed for coffee lovers who want the adjustability of pour-over brewing … without the hassle.

A Bridge Between Brew Methods

Pour-over brewing has its perks, chief among them the simple fact that you can dial in every variable that may impact the coffee that lands in your cup — water temperature, flow rate and so on. But it’s also intensive and easy to mess up, even for pros who find themselves short on time during rushed mornings.

Batch brewing, on the other hand, results in a much more consistent cup of coffee — and it does so with much more convenience (hence why even high-end coffee shops brew with big, industrial machines). However, the lack of variability on most one-button brewers means you can’t always manipulate the extraction how you want at home.

The Aiden attempts to fill the gap between these two traditional methods. The brewer features an adjustable shower head to ensure even water distribution, as well as a variable temperature control that lets you dial in your preferred temperature — and avoid the heat loss that can happen by brewing manually. The two brew baskets adjust the flow rate.

Smart, Streamlined Design

For those just starting out, the Aiden will ship with built-in brew profiles for different roast levels (light, medium and dark). Also, an app lets you schedule brews in advance, so your coffee’s ready as you get out of bed.

Of course, this being Fellow, looks do matter. The modern matte-black machine matches the contemporary look of the brand’s other coffee gear — most notably the EKG Electric Stagg Kettle. Now available for presale, the Aiden Precision Coffee Maker will ship in September.
