Unimatic’s Modello Uno, Due and Quattro received the stealth treatment to go along with new black suede straps.

Since bursting onto the scene less than a decade ago, Unimatic has quickly forged its own unique identity en route to becoming one of the most beloved and sought-after independent watch brands.

The Italian microbrand is arguably best known for two things: Its ultra-minimalist tool watch aesthetic and its steady output of limited releases. The latest launch from Unimatic combines these two hallmarks in impressive fashion by dropping new editions of its three core models in a fully blacked-out colorway and limiting each to just 99 units.

Black Attack

The Unimatic All-Black Series is definitely a vibe (Modello Uno pictured here).Unimatic

The all-black treatment applies to Unimatic’s Modello Uno dive watch, Modello Due field watch and Modello Quattro military watch. All three see their stainless steel cases covered in a black DLC coating (the Modello Uno also features a matte black aluminum bezel insert) and feature matte black dials.

Instead of sticking with the brand’s signature monochrome color scheme, the Unimatic All-Black Series receives a jolt of character thanks to a neo-vintage treatment expressed via gilt accents on the dial and the use of cream-colored Super-LumiNova GL light old radium on the hands and indices.

The watches all include two straps. A black seatbelt nylon strap — NATO style for the Modello Uno and Quattro and a two-piece band for the Modello Due — is complemented by an additional two-piece black suede strap. The use of the luxe material adds a touch of sophistication to the stealthy, militarized design.

Finally, these limited editions can be classified as members of Unimatic’s more premium line, as they’re powered by Swiss-made Sellita automatic movements rather than the Seiko movements found in the brand’s classic lineup. This allows the Black Series watches to not only be more accurate than their standard stainless steel counterparts, but thinner, too.

The Unimatic All-Black Series: What We Think

I mean, what’s not to like? The all-black look is tailormade for Unimatic’s minimalist aesthetic, and the use of gilt accents and suede straps dresses up the watches just enough to keep them from coming across as too aggressive in their militaristic vibe. The price is also quite reasonable, with each variant coming in at under $1,000. For a Swiss movement, a pair of high-quality straps, an original design and specs like 300m water resistance and sapphire crystals on all models, that’s a bargain.

My only complaint? I really wish they were making more of them, but that’s something I could say about just about every watch Unimatic has ever made.
