The Gear Patrol team is buzzing about Birkenstock’s latest release, the Mogami Terra, a sandal made for enjoying the outdoors. The water-friendly shoe competes with your Tevas or Chacos and is available in men’s and women’s sizes. In other Birkenstock news, the shoe brand also just released a special-edition Boston Clog with the fashion house Staud. Guess we’re adding some Birkenstocks to our cart this week …
Today we’re featuring a stylish new hiking shoe, a hoodie inspired by Mars and fish tins bursting with flavor. This is Today in Gear.
A Stylish Hiking Shoe Collab
In case you missed it: Check out the Fitz Roy hiking shoe ($280) — which seems to be more of a hiking sneaker — reimagined by VEJA and Étude. The style incorporates both brand’s initials and gray mineral tones with a splash of blue, an ode to the Vercors Masssif range in France. Technical features include a water-repellent fabric and a rock plate on the sole. Available in men’s and women’s sizes.
A Smaller and Quieter Fan for Summer
Just launched: The summer heat isn’t here quite yet, but you don’t want to wait until the dog days to invest in a personal fan. The Windmill Air Circulator & Fan ($79) has three fan settings and two air circulation settings. Its compact design and quiet motor make it perfect for your desk or bedroom — you can even control the fan with a smartphone app. Choose from five colorways: butter, white, marine, pink and black.
New Sweet and Spicy Tins
Fun and fresh: Fishwife and Fly By Jin release a limited-edition smoked salmon tin today with sweet and spicy Zhong sauce ($39 for three pack) to celebrate the third-year anniversary of their collaboration — the current Fly By Jing smoked salmon with Sichuan chili crisp is a best seller. The new flavor promises to be a hit with its versatility and umami-rich flavor; the brands recommend pairing the tin with everything from dumplings to hummus.
Innovative Outdoor Gear for Camping Season
Adventure ready: Outdoor equipment brand NEMO recently launched its new product lineup for the year, which includes the brand’s first backpack line (from $160). The daypack styles range from 15 to 35 liters, with options for all types of outdoor adventures. Other new products include a convertible duffle and tote line (from $170), an ultralight sleeping pad (from $180) and a down sleeping bag (from $280).
A Hoodie Inspired by Mars’s Dunes
You have our attention: British brand Vollebak’s latest hoodie ($795) is composed of a double-layer 3D knit thats texture is designed to mimic the polar dunes on Mars. The innovative brand used photographs of the planet’s Corduroy Dunes and scaled them down to create the textured material which, according to Vollebak, is highly wicking and insulating while still being breathable.
